Indeed, the l-stem survived in Proto-Germanic as well, as * sōwelan, which gave rise to Gothic sauil (alongside sunnō) and Old Norse prosaic sól (alongside poetic sunna), and through it the words for sun in the modern Scandinavian languages: Swedish and Danish sol, Icelandic sól, etc. This is ultimately related to the word for sun in other branches of the Indo-European language family, though in most cases a nominative stem with an l is found, rather than the genitive stem in n, as for example in Latin sōl, ancient Greek ἥλιος ( hēlios), Welsh haul and Czech slunce, as well as (with *l > r) Sanskrit स्वर ( svár) and Persian خور ( xvar). All these words stem from Proto-Germanic * sunnōn. Cognates appear in other Germanic languages, including West Frisian sinne, Dutch zon, Low German Sünn, Standard German Sonne, Bavarian Sunna, Old Norse sunna, and Gothic sunnō. The English word sun developed from Old English sunne. The predominant calendar in use today is the Gregorian calendar which is based upon the standard 16th-century interpretation of the Sun's observed movement as actual movement. The synodic rotation of Earth and its orbit around the Sun are the basis of some solar calendars. The Sun was thought of by some cultures as a deity. The enormous effect of the Sun on Earth has been recognized since prehistoric times. After this, it will shed its outer layers and become a dense type of cooling star known as a white dwarf, and no longer produce energy by fusion, but still glow and give off heat from its previous fusion. It is calculated that the Sun will become sufficiently large to engulf the current orbits of Mercury and Venus, and render Earth uninhabitable in five billion years. When hydrogen fusion in its core has diminished to the point at which the Sun is no longer in hydrostatic equilibrium, its core will undergo a marked increase in density and temperature while its outer layers expand, eventually transforming the Sun into a red giant. This energy, which can take between 10,000 and 170,000 years to escape the core, is the source of the Sun's light and heat. It is thought that almost all stars form by this process.Įvery second, the Sun's core fuses about 600 million tons of hydrogen into helium, and in the process converts 4 million tons of matter into energy. The central mass became so hot and dense that it eventually initiated nuclear fusion in its core. Most of this matter gathered in the center, whereas the rest flattened into an orbiting disk that became the Solar System. It formed approximately 4.6 billion years ago from the gravitational collapse of matter within a region of a large molecular cloud. ![]() The Sun is a G-type main-sequence star (G2V), informally called a yellow dwarf, though its light is actually white. Roughly three-quarters of the Sun's mass consists of hydrogen (~73%) the rest is mostly helium (~25%), with much smaller quantities of heavier elements, including oxygen, carbon, neon, and iron. Its mass is about 330,000 times that of Earth, comprising about 99.86% of the total mass of the Solar System. The Sun's radius is about 695,000 kilometers (432,000 miles), or 109 times that of Earth. The Sun radiates this energy mainly as light, ultraviolet, and infrared radiation, and is the most important source of energy for life on Earth. It is a nearly perfect ball of hot plasma, heated to incandescence by nuclear fusion reactions in its core. Full release with full support is imminent. More good news: The VLC libraries are now Apple Silicon native so DJ and Scheduler can be completely native on both hardware as Universal builds. Good news on the M1 front: I have Intel builds playing without any issues now so that will be in the 2021.1.1 release, now beta. I have all other cosmetic/functional issues ready if someone needs it and is okay without the stream receive. I'm investigating things I can do while we wait. Even under Rosetta (Intel binary running in emulation), stream receive mostly doesn't work. However, we wait for the stream receive libraries to become native that Radiologik DJ uses before I can release with support for M1 Macs. Resizing the main windows are perfectly fluid compared to on Intel for example. I will be strongly recommending M1 Macs eventually. So, if you did make the jump to the M1 and experience audio glitches on transitions and don't mind the missing Stream Receive and a few cosmetic issues, let me know and i'll get you an ARM build of DJ. We have to wait for the VLC libraries for macOS ARM. But there are still a few things keeping this from a beta release such as not having Stream Receiving working. I just got both DJ and Scheduler running ARM native today. This is solved when Radiologik is compiled for Apple Silicon (ARM). Unfortunately with DJ running on Rosetta 2 on M1 Macs I have audio glitches on the transitions. Kernel extensions are not allowed without making a change in Recovery mode which Rogue Amoeba details. The installation is more involved due to more security again in Big Sur. Rogue Amoeba software Loopback and Audio HiJack are being worked on and have betas. I don't know if Soundflower will work yet. Although everything appears to be functioning fine with Radiologik through Rosetta with testing incomplete still, I discovered it is still a bit early for other software that you may need for your station, particularly for audio routing. I think it will be fast because Apple has made it easy. I hope to have Universal builds to support the M1 natively going forward but this depends a lot on the how quickly the dependent libraries start supporting the M1 which I don't have control over. I expect Radiologik will run fine in Rosetta 2 on these new Macs. Let me know if you find any issues.Īs for the M1-based Macs. Of course I will be fully supporting Big Sur. As with previous OS updates, Radiologik gains no functionality from the OS update so it is recommended to take a conservative approach and hold back if you consider your station important. ![]() Through the betas of Big Sur I already made adjustments to Radiologik that were mostly cosmetic/interface display fixes. ![]() (Fountain is the new open-source markup language that lets a lot of different new screenwriting apps share a common script formatting standard. Other great features I love about Trelby: it exports Fountain markup. Oh, and by the way, Trebly inputs Final Draft files, and saves Final Draft files, so if you’re thinking of making the switch, you can do so in a very friendly, non-destructive way. Trelby’s lag is virtually non-existent, even when I loaded in a test script. Especially over the course of a 90-page screenplay, consisting of 6 months of work, and 20-30 drafts. But those tiny bits of “lag” – even if they’re just mere milliseconds between your keystroke and what appears on the screen – they really add up. All good screenwriting programs do this, of course, but Trelby’s just feels FAST. COFFEE SHOP – NIGHT, then hit Tab and it jumps down and awaits your input for the action/description line. Very intuitive tabbingįor new screenwriters: By tabbing I mean, for example, you type INT. I jumped right in and started writing a scene, and it just flew. The interface is sleek, plain, and modern, and fully customizable. Wow! This app is an elegant, easy-to-use, streamlined little firecracker of a screenwriting program. Take it from me - I’m a desktop guy who used to vehemently poo-poo using anything other than Final Draft, but here are a few others worth your attention: Trelby Whereas software development used to be the realm of large, well-funded companies and teams made up of dozens, if not hundreds of developers and programmers, now it’s all about the smaller, more agile companies rushing in to fill an ever-increasing demand for lighter, cheaper apps, and we screenwriters stand to benefit from the panoply of new options for screenwriting. As the name of the article states: I’m here to provide some cheaper and free alternatives to Final Draft that, in my opinion, really give Final Draft a run for its money. I don’t quite remember much other than I wasn’t a very good beta tester because I was extremely busy at the time, and that the Final Draft folks were very nice and responsive.īut I’m not here to rake Final Draft over the coals. Update 5/23/22 - A few months after this article was originally published, I was invited to take part in the beta development for Final Draft. And Final Draft is there with a fair priced offering for it. And while screenwriters who got their start during the heady days of the typewriter (like me and many of my generation X) are probably not keen on the idea of writing a screenplay on a tablet, thousands of younger screenwriters have no problem banging out scripts on a mobile device. There are tons of excellent features that make Final Draft a solid writing app, and most folks wouldn’t dream of trading their Final Draft for another screenwriting app.Īnd as far as pricing goes, I have to emphasize that Final Draft does offer a lower-cost version of their app for iOS, as well as educational discounts, so my beef with their pricing isn’t full-on Kobe / Angus. But I don’t blame Final Draft – they’ve created and marketed a great product that basically now dominates the screenwriting space.Īnd that domination didn’t come just through great marketing. $199 for Final Draft 12 is a big chunk of change for most aspiring screenwriters. The game has changed when it comes to simplicity and UI design, yet Final Draft still feels a bit stuck in that 90s Microsoft Word vibe, as does its cousin, Movie Magic Screenwriter, and many other writing apps, if we’re being perfectly honest.ĭislike 3) The price. But it was certainly mine, on two different sets of hardware over several years and on several iterations of operating systems.ĭislike 2) The interface/user experience. Is that everybody’s experience? I don’t know. Though it did crash on the Mac, it crashed a lot less than when I ran it on my pc. And to be certain, Final Draft is a solid app and deserves a lot of credit, and certainly not hate.īut what do I strongly dislike about Final Draft? Three things:ĭislike 1) Before I switched from a Windows machine to a Mac, Final Draft had a penchant for crashing in the most inopportune moments, no matter what version I ran. ![]() ![]() I reserve that word for shows like The Bachelor. What do I hate? Well, “hate” is a strong word. And 95% of the time, that’s either a PDF or, you guessed it, a Final Draft file.) (And if you’re running a script coverage service like me, you need to be able to open whatever file the client sends in. What do I love? Its ubiquity: Everybody uses it. ![]() ![]() As much as I can, and then something like this isn’t really helping me. Speaking of which, the latest beta (v3.2) now also runs with Python3 – required for Windows and Linux – but you’ll need PyObjc.Īnd while I don’t really know if this opens un-patched attack vectors, or if this is Apple’s fault (but Intel?) but I like to keep my Mac safe. One reason why the relationship between the water content and the size of the reverse micelle is not linear could be that the equation d RM = d H20 + 2 l c is not an accurate, mathematical description for the reverse micelles analyzed. Table 1 on the previous page lists the calculated diameter of the water droplets for each of the five samples. The slope of the best fit line (m) is 3.156 and from the equation in the handout, the slope can be used to find the diameter of the water droplet (d H2O) in each sample by d H2O = m (W 0). However, since the two W 0 samples appeared to calculate approximately the same d RM, our sample could not be ignored. Notice that data was also taken from Eric’s sample (W 0 = 0.99) to verify if the W 0 =1.00 sample we made was an outlier and could be ignored. However, Figure 1 shows that there is uncertainty in the linear fit that is applied to the data set. The relationship between the size and water content of the micelle was expected to be linear. Next, the diameter of the reverse micelle versus the water content was plotted and is shown in Figure 1. The reverse micelle diameter (d RM) with the corresponding diffusion coefficient obtained from each sample can be found in Table 1. 1 The reverse micelle diameter is found by calculating the hydrodynamic radius of the micelle using the Stokes-Einstein equation and multiplying this value by two. ![]() To calculate the reverse micelle diameter, the diffusion coefficient is used along with the viscosity coefficient of cyclohexane at 35 ☌ (η = 0.75 mPa*s) found in Lange et al. Also, the first time delay was recorded as 1.0 μs and the last delay as 10.0 ms. The wavelength and angle of the laser were set at 632.8 nm and 90°, respectively. In addition to the data listed above, there were some additional experimental parameters recorded. The exact W 0 values, volume of water added, diffusion coefficient, and average intensity of scattered light can be found in the Appendix attached to the report (Table 2). The experimental data was combined with my lab partner and a total of five samples at 35 ☌ were made and analyzed using dynamic light scattering. The experimental steps were followed as described on the handout. In addition, the DLS instrument measures the average intensity of scattered light for each sample which increases with the amount of water content (W 0). The diameter (d RM) is calculated by determining the diffusion coefficient of each micelle using the DLS instrument. The size of these molecular aggregates increases as more water is added to the surfactant. The purpose of the experiment is to use dynamic light scattering as a technique to find the size of Triton X-100 reverse micelles which vary based on the amount of water in each micelle. For the various solutions made, the diameter of the micelle ranges from 10-25 nm and the diameter of the water dropletranges from 3-12 nm. As more water is added, the size of the reverse micelle increases which increases the scattering of the light from the laser. These solutions are made using the surfactant Triton X-100 in cyclohexane and varying amounts of water. Dynamic light scattering is used to measure the size of a reverse micelle by determining the diffusion coefficient and average intensity of scattered light of various solutions. |
